SEED BALLS PREPARATION MERGED WITH MENSTRUAL HYGIENE AWARENESS

On December 7, 2024, the serene rural backdrop of Panchgaon came alive with enthusiasm and purpose as 132 young girls participated in a unique initiative blending environmental conservation with menstrual health awareness. Organized by the ISCI Foundation in collaboration with Jodo India Social Foundation, the event at Government Senior Secondary School, Panchgaon, set the tone for a day dedicated to empowering girls and fostering a greener future.

A Step Towards Environmental Conservation: Seed Ball Preparation

The morning began with an engaging session on seed ball preparation. The 132 girls actively crafted 3,960 seed balls, combining black soil, compost, and native seeds like Amla (Indian Gooseberry) and Belpatra (Bael). Seed balls, an innovative and eco-friendly method of reforestation, have gained traction as a sustainable solution to combat deforestation. The process, simple yet impactful, involves coating seeds with nutrient-rich soil and compost, protecting them until they find a suitable environment to germinate.

The girls were guided step-by-step, learning about the significance of each ingredient and the environmental benefits of their efforts. Volunteers Kartik, Aditi, Khushi, Manish, and Anurag provided hands-on support, ensuring that every participant grasped the importance of their contributions to restoring Dholpur’s green cover. By the end of the session, the energy and commitment of the young participants were palpable, as they proudly stacked the freshly prepared seed balls for future plantation drives.

Each step of the seed ball preparation process was an opportunity for the girls to connect with nature and understand their role in environmental preservation. Discussions highlighted the importance of native plants like Amla and Belpatra in enhancing biodiversity and providing ecological benefits such as soil enrichment and erosion prevention. The participants learned not only the "how" but also the "why" of their actions, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship that will resonate beyond the day’s event.

Menstrual Hygiene Awareness: Breaking the Silence

As the seed ball preparation concluded, the focus shifted to an equally critical topic: menstrual hygiene. The ISCI Foundation and Jodo India Social Foundation are deeply committed to addressing period poverty and promoting menstrual health awareness, especially in rural areas where taboos and misinformation often prevail.

The session began with an animated video designed to simplify complex topics related to menstruation. The visual aids effectively demystified the biological processes and dispelled common myths. Following the video, Miss Aditi and Khushi facilitated an interactive session under the guidance of Senior Gynecologist Dr. Veena Pradhan. The girls actively participated, asking questions and sharing their experiences, creating a safe space for open dialogue.

Reusable sanitary napkins were distributed to all participants as part of the initiative to promote sustainable menstrual practices. These eco-friendly products not only reduce waste but also offer a cost-effective alternative for managing menstrual health. Volunteers took the time to explain the usage and maintenance of the reusable pads, emphasizing their role in ensuring hygiene and comfort.

The session was more than just an educational exercise; it was an effort to dismantle the stigma surrounding menstruation. By encouraging open conversations, the initiative empowered the girls to advocate for themselves and their peers. The combination of practical demonstrations, scientific explanations, and myth-busting discussions created a comprehensive learning experience that resonated deeply with the participants.

Voices of Appreciation

The event received heartfelt commendations from the school’s principal, Shri Ramdeen Ji, who expressed his gratitude to the ISCI Foundation and Jodo India Social Foundation. “This initiative has enlightened our students about crucial health practices while encouraging them to contribute to environmental conservation. It’s a holistic approach to community development,” he remarked.

Parents and teachers also praised the initiative, recognizing its dual benefits of fostering environmental responsibility and empowering young girls with essential knowledge about menstrual health. The blend of practical activities and health education left a lasting impression on the participants and the broader school community.

Teachers noted the enthusiasm of the girls, many of whom shared their excitement about applying what they had learned at home and in their communities. The parents expressed hope that such initiatives would continue to create opportunities for their daughters to grow into confident and informed individuals.

A Message of Gratitude and Vision

EMPOWERING GIRLS AT PACHGAON

Director of ISCI Foundation, Sweta Ji, expressed her heartfelt thanks to the school administration, volunteers, and participants for making the event a success. She emphasized the importance of such initiatives in creating a more informed and environmentally conscious generation. “By engaging these young minds in conservation efforts and equipping them with knowledge about menstrual health, we are sowing the seeds for a brighter and more sustainable future,” she said.

Sweta Ji also shared plans for expanding the initiative to other schools in the region, aiming to reach thousands more students with similar programs. “This is just the beginning,” she said. “Our goal is to inspire a movement where health and environmental awareness go hand in hand, empowering communities to take charge of their futures.”

A Transformative Experience

The morning session at Government Senior Secondary School, Panchgaon, was more than an event—it was a movement. It highlighted the transformative power of education and collective action, proving that even the simplest of initiatives can create a ripple effect of positive change. As the girls carried home their newfound knowledge and reusable sanitary pads, they also carried the hope of a healthier and greener tomorrow.

Beyond the tangible outputs of seed balls and distributed sanitary napkins, the program planted intangible seeds of empowerment, awareness, and community spirit. These young girls left the event not just as participants but as ambassadors of change, ready to contribute to a better world.

The success of the session was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the ISCI Foundation, Jodo India Social Foundation, and the enthusiastic participants. Together, they demonstrated that addressing local challenges with innovative and inclusive solutions can create lasting impact. As the program moves forward, it serves as a shining example of how grassroots initiatives can pave the way for sustainable development, one step at a time.
